I was quite young when I was born at the Charles Booth Memorial Hospital in Cape Town in the early 40's, last century! I was brought up in Woodstock where I attended primary school at Mountain Road Boy's Primary School. High school was Observatory Boy's High School. I matriculated at the SOUTH AFRICAN NAVAL COLLEGE, GENERAL BOTHA in Gordons Bay in 1959 and had the privilege of being the first engineering cadet at the academy. See www.generalbotha.co.za
Although not one of the brightest pupils, I seem to have survived those trying times and, although I trained to be an engineer, I ended up, as so many "Bothy" (ex cadets) boys seemed to have done, in the Insurance Industry.
My fist job was as a filing clerk (I was highly regarded as I had obtained a distinction in mathematics).
My rise to glory in the insurance world was meteoric ........within a year I was promoted to a claims clerk! People had to beg me to pay their claims...(only joking)......... :)
Anyway, I stuck with claims and subsequently became a Loss Adjuster with a very reputable company.
Being young and quite imaginative, I started my own company and branched out into private investigations and I have some really good stories to tell but I do not think this is the correct venue.
I also had a spell in the funeral business but the only nice thing about that was ..........your clients do not argue with you!
I married Alison Hague in 1965 and we have 3 wonderful children, Lisa, Steven & Melody.
In 1977 I married Anne Crawford and shortly thereafter we moved to Johannesburg where I became the Claims Director of an Insurance broking house.
My years in Johannesburg were probably the most traumatic and certainly memorable (apart from all the other wonderful memories, that is) in my life to date.
I came to accept Jesus Christ as my savoir and that was a major turning point for me as all our children were Christians and Anne and I were not.
I also had major surgery on a few occasions, like brain tumor etc but I survived and in fact am better than I ever was.
A number of miracles occurred during this period as well...........when I have discussed these with skeptics they are unable to explain them!
Through Anne I learned to love the bushveld. We have enjoyed many trips into the wilderness areas of Botswana, Zimbabwe and our own country, South Africa.
We have been charged by rhino, snarled at by a lioness and her cub and been within inches of elephants.
I retired from Johannesburg in June 2001 and returned to my beloved Cape Town where, as I have already told you, I was born at an early age.
We have a home in Fish Hoek (now our holiday home), where we lived for a while. However we bought a beautiful old house in McGregor, where we now live.
I am presently Loss Adjusting and also help Annie manage the art gallery, Mulberry Studio, in McGregor.
Unfortunately I am not gifted as Anne but I kinda get along and enjoy working on the computer.
