This side of the Binos family came to Cape Town, South Africa in the early 1900’s. John Binos, born Athens in 1878, married Crysanthe Francis Apostalatos, born in Rhodes on 25 February, 1892, and their first son, Nicholas, my father, was born 25 August 1908. There were two further children, Napoleon and Antonia and, regretfully both have since died. Napoleon married Winifred and they had three daughters. Nicholas first married during the 1930’s and I have no record of his wife’s name at this stage. However, two children were born of that marriage, Sylvia and Nicholas Kenneth (called Mickey). Sylvia married William Meyer.
Mickey married Marlene Florence Mary Cleenwerck in Cape Town on the 4 June 1955. They had three daughters, Gail, Linda and Carol. Nicholas’s second marriage was to my mother, Anna Maria Bothma, born in South Africa, 15 August 1914. This marriage was in Cape Town in 1937 and out of the union was born Patricia Dawn and myself, James Michael. As a young fellow, I was not particularly interested in my family name and although my father, Nicholas, did mix a lot with the Greek fraternity in Cape Town and was known as “Nick the Greek”, he did not engender in us any ethnic traditions.. At this point let me say that my father passed away on 16th April, 1957, my half brother, Mickey, in 1973 and my mother on 15th July, 2003. My paternal grandfather passed away before I was born, whilst my grandmother, Nonna passed away shortly after I was born. |

So there was really little, if any, Greek influence in my life.
It was only after my mother died and, with the introduction of the internet, that I decided to tentatively explore the origins of the Greek name, Binos.
